Untangling The Neck & Shoulders and
Finding Freedom In Your Core Through Forrest Yoga

with Maria Puma Reyes

October 18th, 1-3:30 pm
The neck and shoulders are habitual tension areas for many of us. At times, it seems like we carry the weight of the world in these stiff, overworked and tight areas of our body! Learn to release tension and stress in your neck and shoulders. Support, nourish and lengthen the muscles around these joints. Tone your abdomen, strengthen your back, and create a strong center. Go deeper into internal organs to release toxins, and bring freedom and fluidity into your body. Developing a strong core will help you avoid injuries and is a great compliment to your regular yoga practice. Through heat, focused pranayama and a flowing asana practice we will work with you to detangle the “knots” and limitations that keep you from moving forward into a more open, passionate and fulfilling life.

Maria "Puma" Reyes: Maria began teaching yoga in 2004 and became a Certified Yoga teacher through Forrest Yoga in 2006. Puma also carries certifications in Relax and Renew (Restorative Yoga) with Judith Hanson Lasater and Prenatal Yoga with Janice Clarfield. In March 2007, Maria had the honorof assisting Ana Forrest in a Pennsylvania weekend workshop. Puma weaves her enthusiasm, humor, straight forwardness and compassion into a teaching style that encompasses the strength and intensity of Forrest, the flow and creativity of Vinyasa, the alignment of Iyengar and the relaxing, healing benefits of Restorative yoga. Maria's teachings are rooted in her own life experiences and intuition. On her journey, Maria has also had the opportunity to study with many other teachers including Rolf Gates, Simon Park, Johnny Kest, Manju Jois and Elise Miller. To find out more about Maria "Puma" Reyes please visit her web site.

mariapumareyes From Puma's perspective as a student
Yoga for me has become an extension and expression of my Self. It has paved a path of insight....encouraging me to go within, dig deeper; it has shown me a way to gain greater understanding of Life, and the world around me. Yoga is the key to opening the mind, body and heart.....Yoga sets me free."

Puma as a teacher
"There is no greater joy than to see others deepen their connection with Self. I want to share my passion and love of yoga with others and to help them discover the innate beauty, strength, love and power we each carry within. My mission is to assist people in their pursuit of health and peace of mind. I am dedicated to providing individuals with a safe and nurturing environment to explore their own edges, develop strength and confidence and live a full and rich life."

Yogasana and Pranayama with Richard Rosen.

Steady & Comfortable
Friday, November 14th, 6-9pm
We’re often asked to “ground” the feet in a yoga class, but just as often not instructed exactly how to do that. The secret to this grounding, which simultaneously lengthens the spine, creating both stability and lightness (Patanjali’s “steady and comfortable”), lies in the heads of the femur bones. This asana practice will focus on the femur heads in basic standing poses, leading to an introduction to pranayama.

The “Most Gracious” Channel
Saturday, November 15th, 9am-1pm
Work with the femur heads leads directly to the energetic “front spine,” called in traditional Hatha Yoga the Sushumna nadi, the “Most Gracious” channel. For out purposes, this is an imaginary line of action rooted in the base of the pelvis and rising through the torso and neck to the crown. We’ll start the practice first finding and then focusing on this line in some simple forward bends and twists. At the same time as we create “space” in the groins and armpits, and finish the session with backbends and more pranayama practice.

Heels over Head
Saturday, November 15th, 2-5pm
This afternoon we’ll turn our attention to inverted positions, applying what we learned in the two earlier workshops. We’ll look especially at the shoulder blades and heads of the humerus bones, the upper body analogs to the sacrum and femur heads. Again we’ll end the practice with pranayama practice.

Homage to the Source
Sunday, November 16th, 9am-1pm
Today is dedicated to the 32-pose sequence Richard calls Homage to the Source. These asanas are drawn primarily from the Gheranda Samhita, a 300-year-old Hatha Yoga manual. We’ll also talk a bit about Hatha Yoga history, and finish as we have with pranayama. If you’re curious about the Homage sequence, you can find it on Richard's web site.
